Headmistress Challenge:

NOW September 30 – October 10: Physical bettering
Work to improve something physical. Make repairs, finish a crafting project, or frog a project that needes it, improve your exercise or eating routine, make something out of nothing.
October 14 – 24: People bettering
Work to make things better for a person or people. Work on your own health, donate time or money to an organization that helps people in need, lend someone a hand, make someone feel better, perform a random act of kindness.
October 28 – November 7: Bettering
Any kind of bettering. The sky is the limit!
Yes, these categories overlap. Don’t stress too much about the categories. Do your bettering, and explain to us how it fits the category. We will probably believe you.
Points are as follows: 7 points per challenge submission. If you do all four rounds, then you will receive an extra 7 points, resulting in a total of 35 points instead of 28. This five-for-four deal is the only bonus.

Charms Scourgify
for your Charms homework for the month of October, practice your Scourgify charm by
create a project in grey. To qualify items must be at least 50% grey. Bright colors will not be tolerated. Greys with white, black, neutrals, and other muted colors will be acceptable to the Ministry.
craft a project that is uniform and symmetrical. Examples include blanket squares, dishcloths, triangular shawls, matching socks.

Dark Arts Incarcerous spell
For those of you that want to knit, crochet or weave for your homework we want to see something that can be used as a rope
SPinners we want you to spin a rope aka aran/worsted yarn or thicker. If you want to do a thinner yarn it must be done as a 3 ply yarn from three different strands (a true 3-ply).Dyers We want you to dye an aran/worsted weight yarn or thicker. You may also dye a sockblank as that can be used as a rope.

Deathly Hallows Seminar The Resurrection Stone
The Resurrection Stone, of course, is the second of the Deathly Hallows. As we know, it was passed down from the Peverell family and was hidden in the Gaunts family ring until discovered by Albus Dumbledore. This ring became one of Voldemort’s horcruxes. Headmaster Dumbledore released the Stone when he destroyed the horcrux After which, he hid it in a snitch for Harry Potter to use at the Battle of Hogwarts during his final showdown with Voldemort. Thus, he became the final master of the Deathly Hallows
For your assignment this month, we would like you to be inspired by the Resurrection Stone and “resurrect” a crafting technique you haven’t done in a while.
Of course, we hope your homework project doesn’t drive you mad like the Stone did Cadmus Peverell!
Prompt: Invoke the Resurrection Stone and craft an object using a skill or technique you haven’t used in a while.
Known bonus: Using recycled or salvaged materials will result in an one point bonus. Please describe your reuse in your submission.
A special badge will be awarded at the end of the term for all those who can master the Deathly Hallows. (Turn in a project to the Hallows all three months of the term.)
Needle based non-Rav projects will be accepted if they fit the prompt and the Non-Ravelry Crafts Guidelines; prior approval is not required

Horcrux Seminar destroy a horcrux
to destroy a horcrux, you need to break it beyond magical repair–but here’s the hard part–they are too powerful to be destroyed by normal means such as smashing, breaking or burning. However, Harry Potter and his friends managed to destroy He Who Must Not Be Named’s horcruxes by the sword of Godric Gryffindor and a Basilisk fang, because both objects were infused with basilisk venom, and also by fiendfyre.
learning a new to you craft or technique (please be prepared to explain how it is new to you in your turn in).
Non-Ravelry crafts will be accepted if they fit the prompt; prior approval is not required. Please read the non-Rav craft guidelines before submitting your project.

Patronus Seminar

Task: Be inspired by Prof McGonagall’s ability to cast multiple Patronuses, and craft in multiples:
Knit, crochet, or weave 2 or more of an item. Items must be of the same type (hats, socks, etc), but may be different colors, sizes, patterns, etc. For this class only, items governed by the pairs rule are counted individually; i.e.: Two socks count as two items.
Dyers: Dye 3 shades of a gradient
Spinners: spin a multi-ply yarn

Potions Brain Freeze Concoction
For Potions Classroom homework this month you will need to brew the Brain Freeze Concoction by crafting something that requires you to think or calculate. This includes a complicated weave design, lace or pattern motif, or calculating to re-size an object. Spinners can calculate their WPI and yardage. Dyers can show how they calculate in crafting their dyes and colors they hope to obtain. Explain how your project requires you to think or calculate. Alternatively, craft something that is at least 50% green, the color of the Brain Freeze Concoction.
Non-Rav Crafts WILL BE accepted for the Room of Requirement option WITHOUT prior approval providing they fit one of the prompts.

Muggle Studies Steleus Jinx
Your assignment: Practice the Steleus jinx and learn to identify it. Work with irritating yarns/fiber (eyelash, raffia, mohair, scented, etc) or drag out some dusty yarn/fiber to induce sneezing (stash older than 1 year)
Non-Ravelry crafts will be accepted ONLY FOR THE SECRET PROMPT (found in the Room of requirement) if they fit the prompt; prior approval is not required. Please read the non-Ravcraftguidelines before submitting your project.

Wand Lore The Core
Craft something inspired by wand cores: either the magical creature who gave the core, or the properties the core gives to the wand

ROOM OF REQUIREMENT
CHARMS : The Muffliato charm is useful for creating an unidentifiable buzzing in the ears of anyone nearby To practice the Room of Requirement spell, we would like you to:
craft something to cover ones ears
Creativity is encouraged. If this is not a traditional ear cover, prove it with a picture!
Non-Ravelry crafted ear coverings will be accepted without prior approval.
https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/hp-knitting-crochet-house-cup/3672584/76-100#83

DARK ARTS : The Relashio spell, also known as the Revulsion Jinx is very useful when you want something – an object or a person – to release their grip The spell is a great counter spell to the Incarcerous Spell and it can even be used under water But be aware that there will be a jet of boiling water wherever you point your wand.”
Do not practice in the Black Lake – we do not want to harm the Giant Squid or something else living thereFor this month’s homework:
Knit, crochet, or weave something that cannot be used as a rope.
Spin a fingering yarn or finer. A single ply will also be accepted.
Dye a yarn that will be too thin to be used as a rope (fingering weight or lighter) or dye wool
https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/hp-knitting-crochet-house-cup/3672584/76-100#84
MUGGLE STUDIES:
It is our belief that placing jinxes on Muggles for fun or your own convenience is a disgusting practice! While we have done our duty in educating you on how to perform the Steleus Jinx and how to recognize it, we hope that you will go a step further. In these books you will find the counter-jinx, as well as other methods of removing jinxes without drawing the notice of Muggles. Please study these and share the information among the rest of the class. We encourage you to practice the counter-jinx and other useful spells Assignment: Practice the counter-jinx to the sneezing jinx by working with hypoallergenic yarns or cloth (plant based fibers) or create enchanted handkerchiefs to relieve their symptoms.
Non-Rav crafts will be accepted for this prompt ONLY so long as they fit the prompt. Prior approval is not required. Please read the non-Ravcraftguidelines before submitting your project
https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/hp-knitting-crochet-house-cup/3672584/76-100#85

POTIONS: Brain Tease Draft. This will counter the Brain Freeze Concoction with one gulp. This draft is the same as the Brain Freeze Concoction but has one additional ingredient, unicorn hair. When added at the very end with the wizard’s or witch’s intention of invigoration, the brew will transform from freeze to tease For the Room of Requirement homework this month you will need to brew the Brain Tease Potion by crafting something with a secondary level of interest. For example, a puzzle, a maze pattern square or a double sided object. This requires concentration to craft and can be a puzzle to be solved. Spinners can ply into complex yarn. Weavers can show off their intricate weave designs. Dyers are welcome to show off how their dyes are a puzzle to be solved to get the yarn they desire. You can also craft an object that has at least 50% rainbow colors, the color of the Brain Tease Concoction.
Non-Rav Crafts WILL be accepted for the Room of Requirement option WITHOUT prior approval providing they fit one of the categories above.

THEME TERM : Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Read about it here http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/hp-knitting-crochet-house-cup/topics/3672584

Charms Colovarious charm

For your CHARMS homework for the month of September we would like you to choose one (or more) of the following:
create a project with a color shifting yarn (i.e. a gradient or fade) OR a project with at least 3 DISTINCT colors (i.e. stripes or clear variegation).
spinners may spin a multi colored or shifting yarn in any weight they’d like (Please remember to report your yard as SINGLES and whatever ply you choose)
dyers we also need a gradient, fade or at least 3 distinct colors in your final product (Please remember to give a detailed description of your process OR photos of your process)
Non-Rav Crafts (i.e. MUGGLE crafting) will NOT be accepted as we are focusing on Ministry approved spells.

Dark Arts Fiendfyre curse

This curse will create a flame of abnormal size and heat. The flames are infused with dark magic and may mutate into the forms of a gigantic pack of fiery beasts, including flaming serpents, chimaeras, eagles, and dragons. You must study this curse thoroughly before trying to use it. Inexperienced casters will be able to conjure the flames but will have virtually no control over the curse once it has been unleashed, thereby making the fire into a deadly backfire. I’m sure you will all recall what happened to Vincent Crabbe in 1998. He conjured Fiendfyre but could not control it and it resulted in his death. To learn more about Fiendfyre you are asked to craft any of the beasts typically created in the fire: flaming serpents, chimaeras, eagles, and dragons. You may choose to make 3-d representations of these creatures, or use their image(s) on a project. Alternatively you may choose to craft in the traditional colors of fire: red, orange, or yellow. Please note that we are only accepting the creatures named above. If you wish to craft in a fire color, your project must be at least 50% in that color. We are aware that fire can come in other colors, but for the purposes of our assignment only the colors named above will be accepted.
For this month’s homework:
1. Craft a flaming serpent, chimaera, eagle, and/or dragon. They may be 3-dimensional animals or 2-d images.
OR
2. Craft something with at least 50% red, orange, or yellow.

Deathly Hallows Seminar

t has been told for ages that the Elder Wand was created by Death at the request of Antioch Peverell. It gets its name from the Elder Wood, also known as Elderberry, used to create the wand. He requested the most powerful wand ever created. This power proved difficult to master. He lost his life when another wizard stole the wand due to his boasting. The core of the Elder Wand is the tail hair of a Thestral. That is a very formidable core. It can only be handled by a witch or wizard who is capable of accepting death. When capable of handling this mighty power, one can do amazing magic including being able to mend a broken wand beyond normal magical repair. Despite all of its power, the Elder Wand certainly isn’t unbeatable, however. Throughout history, it has been beaten numerous times and passed to many different owners.
For your homework this month, please complete one of the following tasks:
Craft something that makes you feel powerful or was/is particularly difficult for you to master
OR craft something purple to represent the Elderberry
OR craft your own wand (This should be an actual 3D version of a wand)
A special badge will be awarded at the end of term for all of those who can master the Deathly Hallows (turn-in a project to Hallows all three months of the term)

Horcrux Seminar

Back in the day, professors tried to protect students from this foul magic through secrecy. Dumbledore removed the books from the library. Slughorn altered his own memory to keep the knowledge secret. But all the secrecy just meant delays in finding and fighting Tom Riddle’s horcruxes. Our goal this term is to make sure every student at Hogwarts knows this dark magic exists and knows how to fight it Harry originally wanted to find Voldemort’s horcruxes all by himself, in order to protect his friends, But it would have been impossible. For instance, he wouldn’t have made it into the Ministry to retrieve the locket without Hermione’s polyjuice potion or Ron’s familiarity with the building. Throughout their quest for the horcruxes, Harry, Hermione, and Ron worked together using their unique skills, ways of thinking, and knowledge, along with the help of many, many others.
Your homework this month is to find your allies. Make something you could not have made without the influence of another Hogwarts student. Make sure to explain how they influenced you (please see FAQs). Earburn them to your turn-in for a bonus point.
Non-Ravelry crafts will be accepted if they fit the prompt; prior approval is not required. Please read the non-Rav craft guidelines before submitting your project.

Patronus Seminar

The Patronus Charm requires that you tap into your happiest memory–your most joyous and hopeful moment–and project it outward. The ability to connect to your deepest bliss–allowing it to fill you up–is crucial. Especially in dark times, daily practice of active joy will hone your ability to access and project happiness and hope, and to create a truly powerful Patronus
Task: Practice accessing your happiest memories by crafting your deepest bliss. Be sure to explain your inspiration and how/why this particular crafting choice brings you to your happiest place. Alternately, explore the tumult of emotion that can transform your Patronus by creating in an entirely new-to-you craft.
Non-RAV crafts conforming to HPKCHC Non-RAV Guidelines will be accepted without prior approval

Potions veritaserum

Honesty is highly prized by the Ministry and, while it is preferable that honesty comes naturally, veritaserum is a great way to ensure that the ideal is being achieved.
Veritaserum, for example, can be quite poisonous if brewed incorrectly. If you are unsure of your potion, or just need additional assistance, professors are available after class for further discussion or to provide more detailed instruction.
we would like you to focus on presenting the unalterable truth. To do this, you must follow your pattern exactly (changing the color or substituting a very similar yarn is ok) or craft in white or natural/undyed colors. Please note that weavers can also follow a set weaving pattern or use the color option.
Non-Rav Crafts (i.e. MUGGLE crafting) will NOT be accepted as we are focusing on Ministry-approved spells.

Muggle Studdies

We are studying Muggle items that can be used as projectiles. There are plenty of small items in the Muggle world that can be used as projectiles in cases of emergency. Food is an obvious choice, but there are other things too Small items that fit in the palm of your hand work very well as projectiles, Plates, cups, pill bottles, small vials, writing utensils, and if you need something with a bit more weight, consider a tea kettle or flowerpot.
Your homework this month: Craft a Muggle item that can be used as a projectile.
One bonus point available if it is a stuffed item.

Wand Lore

Study the wood of your wand, particularly its color.
Craft something in the colors of wood.
Non-Rav Crafts will be accepted in this class, if they are made out of wood.
As a special addendum to this particular class, all term, any wand will be accepted for this class, Rav or Non-Rav, regardless if it fits the prompt.
Please see the FAQ in Post 1 for clarification.

Also note: To count, you must personally combine at least two different ingredients to make your drink. Liquid water counts as an ingredient. Frozen water does NOT count as an ingredient. Frozen mixtures that are mostly water (chemically speaking), such as berries, frozen juice, and ice cream, DO count as ingredients.

Arithmancy
Welcome, students! This month we will be studying the number 5. This number represents the color blue and people who willing to take risks. As some of your know, many of Hogwarts alumni have this trait, but we feel this number is best represented by Professor McGonagall!”
Professor EaglesFBFan clears here throat and reminds the class, “Professor McGonagall has risked her life many times for fellow students and wizards. Let’s not forget the great battle that took place here on these very grounds against where she led the resistance to Lord Voldemort! Her ability to to put herself in harms way and protect not only Hogwarts but all of the students who reside here, shows the risk she is willing to take with her life for others.”
For this month’s homework:
1. craft something in blue! If crafting in blue, it must be at least 50%
OR
2. something that is risky for you. By crafting something risky you must make something that is new to you – such as a new stitch pattern or a challenging item. Explain in your submission how the item crafted was challenging for you.
Ravelry crafts only.

Astronomy “For the last month of the term, we will be studying the total solar eclipse,”. “There will be a total solar eclipse crossing North America on August 21. We are hoping many of you can travel to see this magical phenomenon.”
“One of the most magical aspects of the total eclipse is that this is that the moon shadow blocks out the much of the sun’s rays and allows students to study the corona, or outer ring. This is the hottest part of the sun and has strange magic. You still must be extremely careful studying the sun as it can be quite harmful to your eyes. Proper eyewear is a must.”
“Your homework for the month will be to craft something to protect your eyes, or something to represent the hottest part of sun.”
Prompts:
craft something to protect your eyes from harm
craft something in cotton or linen to represent the heat of the corona
craft in yellow or orange (while solar coronas have been known to be in different colors, we are specifically looking for yellow or orange if you choose the color option this month)
spin a lace or fingering weight yarn (this may be plied if desired)
Non-Rav crafts are ok without pre approval as long as it fits the prompts.

Charms Jumpoverum
For homework this month, please practice the Jumpoverum charm by crafting something requires you to take a leap of yarn, something that jumps into your project and gets joined.
This month, we ask that you study the Jumping Charm in one of three ways:
1) Craft a frog. We are looking for pictorial or 3D images of frogs this month.
2) Craft something that joins yarns together, 2 or more separate strands worked into a final object, suggestions include different colored strands, different weights, and/or adding a new skein of yarn.
3) Use at least 50% green for frog study.
Please see the FAQ in post 1o post 1) for clarification.
Only Rav crafts will be accepted in this class.

DADA
We all have someone who inspires us to be better, to push harder. It might be a family member, a friend, a teacher, or a co-worker.
It might even be a celebrity, an activist, or even a group like the police or military, The key is that these are real people who get us to be our best selves.”
Assignment: This month, craft something inspired by your real-life hero(es). Your story should explain what about your project says “My Hero” to you. Please include a picture of the person/people if you can. Non-Rav, needle-based crafts will be accepted without prior approval.

Family & Consumer Science
For your homework, we want you to try your hand at magical baking.”
Practice your baking skills by making a knitted or crocheted treat. Or craft something to protect your hands from the heat of the oven.
Please see the FAQ in Post 1 for clarification.
Non-Rav Crafts will NOT be accepted in this class.

History of Magic
This month we want you to study the stories and myths of the spider Anansi.”
This month we want you to prove your knowledge of Anansi by exploring either his “tricky” side and crafting a project that is particularly tricky or challenging for you, or explore his spider side by using extremely fine weight yarns (fingering or lighter please!)to illustrate the webs of truth and lies he would weave.
Spinners and dyers may choose either the Trickster prompt-(Fractal Spinning, gradient dyes, etc) or choose to work with very fine, lightweight yarns**
Only Ravelry crafts will be accepted in this class.

Muggle Studies Muggle Vacations
Task Option 1: Study a Muggle vacation destination, and craft something inspired by your destination.

Your finished photographs should show the object/objects displayed in their public space.

Potions
Elixir to Induce Euphoria
This month we will be continuing our focus on wellness and studying a potion for your spirit. Mental well-being is as important as physical health when discussing overall wellness.
